The building’s most distinct feature is of course its shape. By now Londoners refer it to as ‘the erotic gherkin,’ a nickname that follows City Hall’s ‘the testicle.’ The cylindrical form was a response to the demands of the site, which is quite small and with a very narrow street section. The architects reasoned that a rectangular plan would have resulted in a very bulky building. Thus in a sense the building shows consideration for its neighbors and also to the general public as the relative small footprint of the tower allows for the remaining space of the site to
be integrated into the city space.
